At just 33, Priscilla Garcia faced the unthinkable: a stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis while also confronting a long-standing struggle with opioid dependence. Determined to be fully present for her three children, she leaned on her family and the expert team at AIS Cancer Center, including nurse navigator Stephanie Teixeira, RN, who guided her through both cancer treatment and addiction recovery. With surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and a recovery program of counseling, support groups, and medication-assisted treatment, Garcia embraced every challenge with courage and determination.

Today, she celebrates two years of sobriety and the hope of a healthy future with her sons. “Cancer saved my life,” she says. “Had I not been in that circumstance, I would not have been able to make the change to become sober.” Sharing her story at this year’s VIPink event, Garcia inspired others facing cancer and addiction, proving that faith, resilience, and the support of a compassionate community can transform even the darkest moments into a second chance at life.
