The surgical team at Adventist Health Bakersfield made history on June 17, 2025, becoming the first in Kern, Tulare, and Kings counties to utilize the da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system.

The highly advanced technology — with ten thousand times more power than the previous da Vinci Xi — was used to perform hernia surgery.

Equipped with a realistic 3D imaging system and flexible robotic arms, the da Vinci 5 allowed John Garcia, MD, to have more control during the surgery.

“With this new machine… everything now is integrated so I can continuously view what I need to see in the operative view,” said Dr. Garcia

The da Vinci 5 enables minimally invasive procedures with precise incisions, allowing patients to recover faster and experience less pain. In addition to general surgery, the da Vinci 5 can be used for specialties, including gynecology, thoracic, and urology.
