Focusing on Men’s Health in November and All Year Long
Throughout Men’s Health Awareness Month in November, the AIS Cancer Center helped raise awareness for cancer prevention and honored the strength of those affected by the disease.
Prostate cancer impacts one in eight men during their lifetime. That’s why the AIS Cancer Center was out in the community, partnering with the Cruizin-4-Charity Car Show. We offered men the chance to connect with providers, get a flu shot and learn more about cancer prevention. Watch the event video below.
Though November is behind us, the fight against cancer doesn’t end. Early detection and innovative cancer treatments remain crucial, and each story of survival inspires hope and reminds us of the importance of staying vigilant.
In this spirit, we’re sharing the story of one of our patients whose journey through prostate cancer highlights the strength of the human spirit and the life-saving care made possible through our community’s support.
Randall Kam, a local dentist, had a routine prostate cancer screening. After his tests came back, he learned he had stage 4 prostate cancer. However, he didn’t let that diagnosis hold him back. As an avid runner, Dr. Kam ran six marathons during his first year of treatment, all while holding encouraging signs and using his platform to remind other men to get screened for prostate cancer.
Working with the experts at the AIS Cancer Center in Bakersfield, Dr. Kam has spent nearly nine years in treatment. While there is no cure for stage 4 cancer, the team at Adventist Health is working to prevent cancer from spreading to other areas of his body. Through it all, Dr. Kam maintains a positive perspective and active routine.
“I do three workouts a day because it lifts my mood and makes me feel better,” Dr. Kam says. “Life is good — it’s really worth living.”
